What is under a Wimborne garden, and why it changes the wall
Wimborne grew up where the Allen runs into the Stour, and that shows the moment a spade goes in. Around the centre it is usually river terrace gravel with London Clay under it, and out on the flat by the water meadows there is alluvium, which is softer and far less predictable. North of the town the bedrock turns to the sands and clays of the Poole Formation. Topsoil brought in by a previous owner sits on top of all of it, so what is actually under a wall here is not always what the map says. That is why the ground gets opened up before a price goes on paper, not after.
- Gravel drains and takes a footing well. The clay under it does not, and it moves with the seasons and with anything large growing nearby.
- On the low ground near the Stour and the Allen the footing goes deeper, and that goes in the written quote before a brick is ordered.
- The old centre is Georgian brick and colour-washed render, with Victorian terraces and later estates round it, so half of a repair here is finding the right brick.

It depends on the job. A lot of the older frontages in the town centre want lime mortar, and heritage repointing is the one thing we do not do. We would rather tell you that than repoint soft old brick in the wrong stuff. New walls, brick repairs and repointing on later brickwork we are happy to quote for. Work in a conservation area or on a listed building can need consent from Dorset Council first, so it is worth a call to them before anything is booked in.
How deep do the footings go on a garden wall here?
That gets decided on site, and Wimborne is a good example of why. The centre sits on river terrace gravel with London Clay under it, the low ground by the Stour and the Allen has softer alluvium on it, and north of the town the bedrock is the sands and clays of the Poole Formation. Gravel takes a footing well. Clay and alluvium want more thought. Imported topsoil hides the lot, so the trial hole comes before the number.
Can you match the brick on an older Wimborne house?
