Brickwork repointing means renewing the mortar joints between bricks once the original mix has cracked, crumbled or washed out, rather than replacing the bricks themselves. It suits any wall where the brick is sound but the pointing has failed: garden and boundary walls, house walls, chimney stacks and steps. We rake the old mortar out to a proper depth, not just skim over the top of it, then repoint in a mix matched to what's already there.

What it costs comes down to the time we'll be on site, the materials, how easy the wall is to get to, and the state of what's already there. Most of the brick repointing we're asked to look at is a wall, or a section of one, where the mortar has gone soft, crumbly, or started falling out of the joints altogether. Left alone, water gets further into the joint every winter, and what started as a cosmetic problem on the surface ends up letting damp into the wall behind it.
