What Blocking Up a Doorway or Window Involves
An old doorway or window that's no longer needed doesn't have to leave a scar in the brickwork. We take out the frame, then rebuild the opening using brick that matches the surrounding wall in colour, size and bond, toothed into the existing brickwork rather than simply butted up against it. The lintel and cill are dealt with properly, and the wall is made good on both sides, inside as well as out, so the finished brickwork reads as part of the original wall rather than a patch on top of it. It suits an old external door no longer in use, a window blocked for security or layout, or an opening left over after an extension.

Blocking up a doorway or bricking up a window is more common than most homeowners think. It comes up after a layout change inside the house, when an old external door isn't needed once a kitchen or hallway has been reworked, when a window needs closing off for security or to fit furniture against the wall, or when an opening is left over once an extension has been built and its old external wall is now internal.
The result depends almost entirely on the technique. A doorway or window that's simply bricked over, with new brick butted up against the old, leaves a straight seam that shows exactly where the opening used to be, and it's often the line where cracks start. Toothing the new brickwork into the existing wall, so the courses interlock rather than sit side by side, is what stops that happening.
Matching the brick matters as much as the method. Bond pattern, brick size and mortar colour all need to line up with the wall around the opening, and older brick weathers differently to new, so getting a close match takes a proper look at what's already there rather than a guess from a catalogue.
