This isn't a safety check of your flue. For anything to do with the flue itself, that's a job for a chimney sweep or a HETAS engineer.
Chimney Repointing and Repairs in Dorset: The Detail
What a chimney repair actually needs varies more than most jobs on the house. A short spell of repointing on an easy-access stack is a different job to a full chimney rebuild that needs scaffolding up and half the courses taken down and relaid. Height, access, how much of the stack has failed and the condition of the existing brick all affect how a job is scoped, which is why we price every chimney job after a visit rather than off a description over the phone.
The most common problem is straightforward. Mortar erodes fastest at the top of the house, where the stack takes the brunt of wind, rain and frost that the rest of the walls are sheltered from. Once the pointing has gone, water gets into the joint, freezes, and starts pushing the brick apart. Left long enough, that turns a simple chimney stack repair into brickwork that needs rebuilding.
Flaunching, the mortar collar around the base of the chimney pots, fails the same way and for the same reason. A cracked or missing flaunching is one of the more common ways water finds its way into a chimney breast, and it is usually put right alongside the repointing rather than treated as a separate job.
Not every stack needs a full chimney rebuild. Where the brick underneath is sound, repointing on its own puts the stack back to a weathertight state. Where bricks have spalled, cracked, or the stack has started to lean, the affected courses are taken down and rebuilt properly, rather than pointed over and left to fail again in a few years.
This is brickwork, and it stays brickwork. We repoint, repair and rebuild the stack itself: the masonry, the joints and the flaunching. We don't sweep chimneys, line flues, or carry out roofing or leadwork, and we won't tell you a stack is safe to use or compliant with building regulations, because that isn't our trade to assess. Where a job needs a chimney sweep, a HETAS engineer or a roofer, we'll say so and point you toward the right trade rather than guess.
