From Sleepers to a Proper Flight of Steps
The old steps up this Bournemouth garden were timber sleepers with gravel between them. The sleepers had gone tired and broken, the gravel had spread, and the steps weren't safe to walk up any more.
We ripped them out for a blank canvas, laid a concrete foundation, and built a new flight in block and brick. The treads and risers are slabbed in a textured concrete slab the customer picked out themselves.
Each step is now lower, with less distance between them, so it takes less effort going up and coming down. That was the customer's own brief: steps they'll still be comfortable on in years to come.

Why the Steps Came Out Rather Than Being Patched
The brief was to make the steps safe again. Swapping out the worst sleepers would have kept the same problem: timber that breaks down and moves, with steps higher and further apart than they needed to be. So the whole flight came out and started again from a concrete base.
